Ulver - Bergtatt

Despite their later series of electronic albums, you won't find cheesy "black metal" synth lines in Bergtatt (translated as "intrigued" or spellbound.) Nor will you find generic blast beats, high-pitched shrieking, or guitars drowned in reverb and poor production quality. ok, so maybe there is a little screaming and blastbeats and poor production, but it sure as hell isn't generic. instead, what you will find is an album that falls somewhere between satyricon's dark medieval times, and burzum's hvis lyset tar oss, yet more accessible then both. The album is most notable for both it's use of chant-like vocals, and also that of the 3 non-electronic ulver releases, it is the most palatable, unless your an Norwegian acoustic mini song folk freak like i occasionally am. or if your a fan of anal cunt (the band...). the melodies are archaic, medieval, and clear and nicely crafted. the album is sung in Norwegian, and stays strong all the way through. Chances are if you're listening to the classic example of black metal, aka: mayhem, burzum, emperor, enslaved, early satyricon and immortal, and have en appreciation for the atmosphere of albums like amorphis's tales from a thousand lakes, or really dig opeth, this album fits nicely along side of all of the above. For myself personally, this is an irreplaceable aspect of the whole Norse black metal "feel" in the abstract. here it is, check it out for yourself:
